CITY SMOKE
From tall black
chimneys leaps the smoke;
Climbs high the drifting
ladder of the wind;
Leaves far behind
the chasing flames
that mount the sky to catch
Laughs out its joy in
soft white puffs;
Then slowly fades to pearl and purple,
And, settling to the earth,
Outspreads o’er all the city
Its brooding, dove-gray wings!
